Ouroboros — The First Living Thing In The Universe

The Ouroboros or Uroborus is an ancient symbol depicting a serpent or dragon swallowing its own tail and forming a circle.

The Ouroboros often represents self-reflexivity or cyclicality, especially in the sense of something constantly re-creating itself, the eternal return, and other things perceived as cycles that begin anew as soon as they end (compare with phoenix).

It can also represent the idea of primordial unity related to something existing in or persisting from the beginning with such force or qualities it cannot be extinguished. The ouroboros has been important in religious and mythological symbolism, but has also been frequently used in alchemical illustrations, where it symbolizes the circular nature of the alchemist’s opus. This week, the paint company Benjamin Moore will present its Hue Awards for the best use of color in architecture and interiors, and the lifetime achievement award will go to the New York design team of William Diamond and Anthony Baratta, whose sophisticated, bold, and vividly-colored interiors have been featured in The New York Times Magazine.

Jed’s Other Poem

Official music video for Grandaddy’s song “Jed’s Other Poem (Beautiful Ground).” Jeddy-3, a humanoid robot built from spare parts, is a recurring character in Grandaddy’s 2000 album ” The Sophtware Slump. ” According to Grandaddy, before Jed’s system crashed he wrote poems. Poems for no one.

This was programmed entirely in Applesoft BASIC on a vintage 1979 Apple ][+ with 48K of RAM — a computer so old it has no hard drive, mouse up/down arrow keys, and only types in capitals. First open-source music video, code available on website. Cinematography by Jeff Bernier.

The Day The Media Died

A parody by L. McDuff on the decline of advertising and media conglomerates and the impact to the traditional models brought about by the accelerating migration to digital. The song was written following the success of the Wall Street Meltdown parodies that McDuff wrote.  Like Wall Street Meltdown and Wall Street Meltdown Redux, this new video, Mad Avenue Blues, takes a popular song, Don McLean’s American Pie, and substitutes it with industry-specific lyrics. Well done and pretty good singing too.
